Consent Pro Google Tag Manager Integration
Connect your Google account to review and manage Google Tag Manager from your AI assistant. You can inspect consent settings, prepare edits to tags, triggers and variables, and review changes before publishing.
Work on one container at a time and name the container when you have more than one. Reading settings does not change your container. Edits are saved in a separate Consent Pro MCP workspace and reach your live site only after you approve publication.

Connect your Google account
These instructions target production. Use the same environment for your Consent Pro account and AI connection.
- Connect your AI client using
https://mcp.consentpro.com/mcp. - Choose Full access, or Custom with View Google Tag Manager. Select the editing and publishing permissions you want to allow. Restoring an earlier published version requires the separate Roll back Google Tag Manager permission.
- Ask your assistant: "Connect Google Tag Manager."
- Open the returned link yourself in your browser. Keep it private and open it only if you requested it. The link expires after ten minutes.
- Check the displayed Finsweet account and workspace, then continue to Google.
- Sign in with the Google account that has access to your containers and approve the access you need.
- Return to your assistant and ask: "Which Google Tag Manager containers can I access?"
Connections belong to the person who creates them within their Consent Pro workspace. You can connect several Google accounts; specify the account when needed.
Permissions
Google asks for access to identify your account, read container settings, edit containers, create versions and publish changes. Your Google role still determines what you can do in each container. The Google permissions apply to the containers that account can access, including containers added later.
You separately choose which actions your assistant may perform through Consent Pro. Reviewing a container does not approve editing or publishing it. If access is missing, reconnect with the required permissions.
Consent Pro does not manage Google Tag Manager users or accounts and cannot delete containers. Individual website visitor or consent records are not retrieved from Google.
Review your consent setup
Try these requests:
- "Review the consent settings in my published container."
- "Show me which consent categories my marketing tags require."
- "Review my saved Google Tag Manager changes before I publish them."
Choose your intended Google measurement approach before changing Google tags:
- Basic: block Google measurement until the required consent is granted.
- Advanced: supported Google tags can send cookieless measurements while storage consent is denied.
Installing a Consent Pro template does not establish which approach you want or prove that every tag behaves correctly. Check the actual settings and test with Tag Assistant and your browser. Third-party tags need consent appropriate to their purposes in either approach.
Keep purchase, lead, click and navigation tags on their business-event triggers. A consent change is not a conversion. See consent-aware GTM troubleshooting for category checks and browser testing.
Make and publish changes
- Review the container. Ask what needs attention and decide which changes you want.
- Prepare the changes. Ask to install the Consent Pro template, update consent requirements or edit specific tags, triggers or variables. Check the proposed changes before approving them.
- Review the saved result. You can inspect the Consent Pro MCP workspace in Google Tag Manager or ask your assistant to review it before publication. Avoid making simultaneous edits in the dashboard and your assistant.
- Publish when ready. Ask to publish and approve the changes shown. If the container has changed since your review, review the updated result before proceeding.
- Test your website. Verify rejection, partial acceptance, returning visitors and withdrawal in Tag Assistant and the browser. Publishing does not prove that every visitor immediately receives or enforces the change.
When installing the Consent Pro template, review its consent defaults and the regions they cover. Configure defaults to match your intended banner setup; adding a template does not automatically select Basic or Advanced measurement.
If a change or publication is interrupted, check the result in Google Tag Manager before repeating it. If you need to restore an earlier published version, select the version, review the differences and approve the restoration. Restoring a version changes the live container and may require a later review of saved workspace edits.
Restoring an earlier version does not change Google's latest version used to synchronize workspaces. Check the live version, latest version and publication history before making further changes. A version offered for recovery may already have been published and later rolled back. Review that complete version separately before approving recovery; the current workspace changes do not describe what recovery would publish.
Disconnect a Google account
Ask "Disconnect my Google account" and name the account if you connected more than one. Disconnecting removes the connection and revokes its Google access unless another connection still uses it. It does not edit your Google Tag Manager containers.
If access could not be revoked at Google, remove Consent Pro from your Google Account permissions. Ask to connect again if you want to restore access later.
Troubleshooting
- A container is missing: check the Google account you connected and its access in Google Tag Manager. Specify the account and container if there is more than one match.
- You cannot edit or publish: check both your Consent Pro connection permissions and your role in Google Tag Manager. Reconnect if the required Google access was not approved.
- Google is temporarily unavailable: wait before trying again. If a change was interrupted, check its result before submitting it again.
- Tags still run unexpectedly: review their consent settings and triggers, then test your published website. An automated review cannot confirm arbitrary custom code or establish legal compliance.
How connection data is handled
Consent Pro's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements: Tag Manager data is used only to provide the audits and the changes you ask for, is never sold or used for advertising, and is not read by people except with your consent, to investigate abuse, or as the law requires.
Consent Pro stores your Google account ID/email, granted permissions, workspace association and connection timestamps on Cloudflare infrastructure. Stored authorization tokens are encrypted and are never returned to your assistant.
Requested Google Tag Manager settings and findings are shared with your chosen AI client and may be processed by its AI provider according to that provider's policies and settings.
Stored connection records have no automatic expiry. Disconnecting removes the stored connection and token. Revoking Consent Pro access in your Google Account stops further API access but does not automatically delete Consent Pro's stored connection records or information already received by your AI client.
